Most people are happy if 10 out of 100 come up after their presentation to tell them how great it was, how moved they were.
That’s only 10%.
There’s a false idea out there that “You can’t reach everyone”. Clearly that bogus conclusion was put forward by someone who couldn’t reach people. Yes, it might be the case for many people, they aren’t able to reach everyone.

What happens to most people
The problem is most people have no idea how to do this. While they might be fine one-on-one, when you put them in front of a group, talking to multiple people simultaneously throws them off.
It doesn’t even have to be a very large group, it might be only 10 or 20 people. But talking to a group can make you lose it. The larger and more formal the audience, the more intimidating it becomes.
Especially if the stakes are high.
If you’re like many people, you get nervous. Possibly there are some presentations you sweat for weeks in advance and don’t sleep well the night before. Perhaps you rehearse and rehearse.
The only thing most people know about preparation is how to create slides and they endlessly edit them.
Many people feel “judged”. Makes it tough to be authentic and you probably hate that.
You need to LEARN what great communicators know.
Great communicators communicate.
When you sit through a lot of corporate presentations, it becomes obvious that most people don’t know how to cross that bridge to truly great communication.
So not only do their slides go into “presentation mode”, they themselves go into a very artificial “presentation mode”. They force themselves into that unnatural stream of hyped-up or monotonous outflow of words you see so much of in corporate presentations.
They try to cover their nervousness, fail to connect with everyone in their audience, talk too fast. And hope.
Hope is not going to get you far. For anything.
No wonder people hate to see themselves on video after a presentation. We see this all the time. They put their heads in their hands and groan about how awful they look. Often the best they can say about themselves is, “Well, that wasn’t as terrible as I thought it was.”
Low standards indeed.
People are often bright, intelligent, skilled, knowledgeable and full of unique personality that makes them absolutely lovable in those moments when they’re at their best.
But none of that comes through in their presentations. What comes through is a nervous, scripted, sterile, corporate, ineffective version of themselves.
People are capable of much, much more. They know it, but have no idea how to achieve it.
